Are you a dedicated high school senior in Texas who has shown a passion for raising and showing goats? The MJL5 Livestock Scholarship is calling for applicants who embody the spirit of agriculture, leadership, and commitment to the goat-showing community. Sponsored by MJL5 Livestock and Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q in San Antonio, this scholarship aims to support the educational aspirations of students eager to make a difference in the livestock industry. We will be awarding 3 individual $1500.00 scholarships.

Eligibility

Criteria:

Must be a graduating high school senior from the class of 2024.

Must have actively participated in goat showing for at least 3 years.

Demonstrates a commitment to pursuing a career in agriculture or a related field.

Scholarship

Requirements:

Complete application submission by email no later than 12 PM, May 1, 2024.

Submission to be reviewed by Tim & Christy Louton.

Responses to questions designed to gauge your passion, leadership, and career goals.

Reflect on how the scholarship aligns with your personal and educational goals. Consider the financial assistance it provides and how it enables you to pursue your passion for agriculture or veterinary sciences. Highlight your commitment to the livestock industry and your desire to make a difference in this field.

2. College/University Plans:

Discuss the institution you've been accepted to, emphasizing how its programs, culture, and values support your career objectives. If it's renowned for its agricultural or veterinary programs, detail how this excellence matches your aspirations. Explain how the school's community, resources, or location contribute to your academic and professional growth.

3. Lessons from Livestock Showing:

Share a pivotal lesson about responsibility, dedication, or compassion you've learned through showing livestock. This could be about the importance of consistent care, ethical treatment, or understanding animal behavior. Your aim here is to convey the depth of your engagement and your internalized values.

4. Career Goals: Outline your long-term career vision, whether working in animal health, agriculture business, or another related field. Explain how your chosen career path will allow you to contribute to the livestock industry or rural communities. Your goals should reflect ambition and a clear understanding of the industry's needs.

5. Leadership and Achievements: Detail your involvement in leadership roles, such as FFA officer positions, 4-H club leadership, or community service projects related to agriculture. Mention specific programs, what you learned, and how they shaped your leadership style. Highlight any awards or recognitions received, underscoring their relevance to your career path.

6. Best Qualification: Identify a strength or accomplishment that sets you apart, such as resilience in overcoming challenges, exceptional skills in livestock management, or a notable project that impacted your community. This should underline your unique value and readiness for higher education and future career endeavors..

7. A Humble, Hungry, and Smart Story: Narrate a true experience showing goats where you embodied these qualities. "Humble" could involve acknowledging mistakes and learning from them, "hungry" might be about your drive to improve and succeed, and "smart" could reflect your strategic thinking or emotional intelligence in handling the goats or interacting with peers. This story should demonstrate your character, work ethic, and ability to grow from experiences.

2024 Showmanship Essay Contest: "Shaping the Future of Showmanship"

Are you ready to share your journey and inspire others?

MJL5 Livestock is thrilled to announce the return of our annual Essay Contest, this time with a twist! We're looking for stories that not only reflect your dedication and achievements but also how you're shaping the future of showmanship.

This Year’s Theme: "Innovation and Resilience"

We want to hear how you've embraced the principles of being Hungry, Humble, and Smart in your showmanship journey, especially through innovative approaches or resilient responses to challenges. How have you pushed boundaries, adapted, and grown, not just as a showman but as a pioneer of the future?

Who Can Enter:

• Open to all young goat showmen and women who are ready to tell their story of the past year in showmanship.

How to Enter:

1. Write a story (1000-2000 words) reflecting on your past year in showmanship, focusing on the theme of "Innovation and Resilience."

2. Include photos that capture the essence of your story—these can be during shows, practicing, or any moment that represents your journey.

3. Submit your story and photos via email to tim@mjl5livestock.com by May 20, 2024.

Prizes:

• Grand Prize: A spot in our full-day clinic on August 2, 2024, your story featured on a commemorative banner at the event, your story posted on our website, and the choice between a $750 credit towards a wether goat purchase or a one-year lease of a doe, including showing rights and return policy. And, of course, some MJL5 Gear

• Runner-Up Prizes: New categories including "Most Inspirational Story" and "Best Young Showman" (for participants under 12).

1 winner in each category

• Free entry into the Thursday 1/2-day clinic and some MJL5 Gear

• All participants will receive recognition at our Clinic in August.

Judging Criteria:

1. Adherence to Theme: How well your story fits the "Innovation and Resilience" theme.

2. Hungry, Humble, Smart: Illustrations of these qualities in your experiences and growth.

3. Creativity and Originality: Fresh perspectives and innovative approaches in your story.

4. Emotional Impact: The ability of your story to inspire, move, and engage the audience.

5. Quality of Writing: Clarity, organization, grammar, and style.

6. Photographic Support: How well your photos complement and enhance your narrative.

Special Events:

• Social Media Challenge: Share a teaser of your story or a memorable photo on social media with the hashtag #MJL5Innovates for a chance to be featured on our pages!

Final Thoughts: Your journey in showmanship is uniquely filled with lessons, achievements, and moments of growth. We can't wait to read your stories of innovation, resilience, and success. Remember, every story counts, and yours could be the one to inspire a new generation of showmen and women.
